Blue Morpho basking

A rare glimpse The Blue Morpho rarely opens its wings when landed, much to the frustration of our visitors. It would be too easy a catch for bird predators. They only bask when they are cold and need to heat up. When on the wing though; it is another story. The huge surface area of their wings means that one wing beat and they can move to the side, dodging any bird predators. It has a characteristic slow bobbing flight is quite unlike any other butterfly.
